October 2016 TBR

For the month of October, I have decided once again to go with a themed TBR. And of course if it is October it has to be Halloween and scary themed! All of the book on my TBR this month are all going to be scary or mystery books that I've been meaning to read. I haven't yet chosen a costume for Halloween, I'm having a really hard time choosing. I know I want to be a bookish character but I'm not sure who I want to do yet. Without further ado, here are my spooky reads for the month of October!

The Outliers          By: Kimberley McCreight

It all starts with a text: Please, Wylie, I need your help. Wylie hasn’t heard from Cassie in over a week, not since their last fight. But that doesn’t matter. Cassie’s in trouble, so Wylie decides to do what she has done so many times before: save her best friend from herself.
This time it’s different, though. Instead of telling Wylie where she is, Cassie sends cryptic clues. And instead of having Wylie come by herself, Jasper shows up saying Cassie sent him to help. Trusting the guy who sent Cassie off the rails doesn’t feel right, but Wylie has no choice but to ignore her gut instinct and go with him.
But figuring out where Cassie is goes from difficult to dangerous, fast. As Wylie and Jasper head farther and farther north into the dense woods of Maine, Wylie struggles to control her growing sense that something is really wrong. What isn’t Cassie telling them? And could finding her be only the beginning?

This book sounds like a mix of Pretty Little Liars and . A contemporary mystery, I love the books that are plausible in real life because it makes it so much more creepy. And adding in the modern factor of phones and the like keep you guessing cause you never know who has actually sent something. I am looking forward to reading about the cryptic clues and trying to piece everything together before the plot tells me what happened. A great and creepy start to my list I can't wait to read this!

A Study in Charlotte
By: Brittany Cavallaro

Jamie Watson has always been intrigued by Charlotte Holmes; after all, their great-great-great-grandfathers are one of the most infamous pairs in history. But the Holmes family has always been odd, and Charlotte is no exception. She’s inherited Sherlock’s volatility and some of his vices—and when Jamie and Charlotte end up at the same Connecticut boarding school, Charlotte makes it clear she’s not looking for friends.
But when a student they both have a history with dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance. Danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other.

I have always loved Sherlock Holmes in all forms; I started reading the original stories when I was seven years old. Seeing a young adult version with their descendants sounded absolutely amazing and I had to have it! The cover is gorgeous as well which helps. I am going to love seeing how the descendants live up to the originals and seeing which quirks have been passed down and seeing them come together to solve the case. More of a fun mystery, I am certainly looking forward to reading this one!

And Then There Were None
By: Agatha Christie

Ten . . ."
Ten strangers are lured to an isolated island mansion off the Devon coast by a mysterious "U. N. Owen."
"Nine . . ."
At dinner a recorded message accuses each of them in turn of having a guilty secret, and by the end of the night one of the guests is dead.
"Eight . . ."
Stranded by a violent storm, and haunted by a nursery rhyme counting down one by one . . . as one by one . . . they begin to die.
Seven . . ."
Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive?

I have never read an Agatha Christie mystery before and I thought this would be the perfect chance to read one. I saw the commercial for this book that had been made into a miniseries for tv and it piqued my interest. So when I saw the book I decided to pick it up. I'm really excited to finally be reading a book by the Queen of the murder mystery. This one sounds like a great one too! Definitely getting the Clue vibe which you can never go wrong with.

Long Lankin         By: Lindsey Barraclough

When Cora and her younger sister, Mimi, are sent to stay with their elderly aunt in the isolated village of Byers Guerdon, they receive a less-than-warm welcome. Auntie Ida is eccentric and rigid, and the girls are desperate to go back to London. But what they don’t know is that their aunt’s life was devastated the last time two young sisters were at Guerdon Hall, and she is determined to protect her nieces from an evil that has lain hidden for years. Along with Roger and Peter, two village boys, Cora must uncover the horrifying truth that has held Bryers Guerdon in its dark grip for centuries — before it’s too late for little Mimi. Riveting and intensely atmospheric, this stunning debut will hold readers in its spell long after the last page is turned.

Long Lankin as a ballad has always intrigued me. He is created as this bogeyman to beware of, but nothing much is really said about him at all. Seeing as this book is inspired by the tale, I'm looking forward to seeing how Long Lankin comes into play. This book ups the creep factor in that it involves children. Murder and children never mix so it is even more creepy when they do come together. I think this will be a delightfully creepy book and a great add to my list this month!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children         By: Ransom Riggs

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

This book has been on my TBR shelf ever since I bought it after Jesse from jessethereader on Booktube convinced me to buy it. He was so passionate in his love for this series that even though it is pretty far from the norm of what I read I decided to give it a chance. What really convinced me to bump it up on my list was seeing the trailer for the movie. I fell in love with the trailer and knew I had to read it as soon as possible. Since I am also planning to see the movie in theatres I definitely want to read it before I see the movie. This book just screams Halloween to me, with the old photos and paranormal theme to the story. I am really excited to read this and then see the movie afterwards!

Evil Librarian       By: Michelle Knudsen

When Cynthia Rothschild’s best friend, Annie, falls head over heels for the new high-school librarian, Cyn can totally see why. He’s really young and super cute and thinks Annie would make an excellent library monitor. But after meeting Mr. Gabriel, Cyn realizes something isn’t quite right. Maybe it’s the creepy look in the librarian’s eyes, or the weird feeling Cyn gets whenever she’s around him. Before long Cyn realizes that Mr. Gabriel is, in fact . . . a demon. Now, in addition to saving the school musical from technical disaster and trying not to make a fool of herself with her own hopeless crush, Cyn has to save her best friend from the clutches of the evil librarian, who also seems to be slowly sucking the life force out of the entire student body!

I was recently contacted by Candlewick Press and they asked if I would like a copy of this book to review. I read the synopsis and thought this book would be great for my spooky themed October TBR! I am getting some major Buffy vibes from this book which YES! GIVE IT TO ME NOW!!! I loved Buffy and this is anything like it then I would adore the book. Demons and books and love, oh my! This is going to be quite the book I think!
